Australian 12 Month Tourist Visa Requirements
To be eligible for an Australian 12 month tourist visa you must be a genuine visitor.
If you apply from outside Australia, you must be outside of Australia for immigration to make a decision on your application. If you apply for this type of visa to extend your stay in Australia you must be in Australia to be granted the visa.
A twelve month tourist visa may be granted if you:
- Have complied with the conditions of your previous visa.
- Meet all the eligibility criteria for this visa.
- Do not have a 'no further stay' condition on your visa.
You should note that a further visa, if granted, will cease any visa or ETA currently held as will the entitlements attached to that visa or ETA.
If a decision has not been made on your application before your original visa expires, you will be able to remain lawfully in Australia until the application has been finalised.
If you are refused a further visa, you must leave Australia before the expiry of your authorised stay period.
12 month visa grants are issued with no further stay notices on them meaning that you are unable to apply for a different visa from within Australia.
You must also have a valid passport from one of the following countries.

- United Kingdom - British Citizen
- United Kingdom - British National
- United States of America
- Vatican City
* A Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) cannot be used to apply for an ETA. Residents of Hong Kong require a citizen passport to apply for this visa.
** Holders of Taiwan passports can only be processed for an ETA if residing and applying in Taiwan. Applications can be lodged with an approved ETA travel agent in Hong Kong, or Australian Visa Services officers in Taipei.
